FAQ on the Engine and Chassis
What does the timing belt do?
It transfers the turning force of the crankshaft to the camshaft, so that the valves open and close in time with the pistons and combustion happens at the right moment.
Why must the timing belt be changed on schedule?
A worn belt can slip a tooth or tear, and on most Volkswagen engines the valves then collide with the pistons, causing serious and expensive damage. Intervals run up to around 360,000 km depending on the engine and use — a tear gives no warning.
Can I change the timing belt myself?
No. It needs vehicle-specific locking tools and exact tensioning; getting it wrong damages the engine.
How long do spark plugs last?
Roughly 30,000 to 90,000 km depending on the engine. Lots of short trips and long idling shorten their life; keeping the oil level correct helps.
Why replace spark and glow plugs?
Worn plugs cause misfires, a loss of power and higher fuel consumption, and a failed plug can damage the catalytic converter. The wrong plug or a badly fitted one causes significant damage, so it is a workshop job.
When should shock absorbers be checked?
From about 60,000 km, and at every service. They wear so gradually that the change is hard to notice until braking, grip and steering stability are affected.
How do I know a silencer or exhaust is failing?
It gets noticeably louder, or it rattles, drones or knocks. Have it inspected — a leaking exhaust affects emissions and can let fumes reach the cabin.
What gearboxes does Volkswagen use?
Mainly the DSG dual-clutch transmission, plus conventional manual and automatic gearboxes depending on the model.
